Book Signing – Mon, June 19

Rev. Blair Hull, UCC recently pastor at Campbell United Church of Christ in Silicon Valley, and now serving at Whitewater Congregational, UCC in Whitewater, WI, has published her first book.  St. Mary’s Private Dancer features UCC pastor (naturally) and sleuth Shepherd Murdoch!  Rev. Hull will be with us at IUC on Monday evening June 19 from 5:30-7:00 pm for a reading, book-signing, and refreshments.   Stop by, hear about “Shep’s” detective exploits and pick up a good piece of summer reading.

Christmas Eve Service

Voter Forum – October 23

On Sunday evening, October 23, 6 – 8 pm a speaker from the League of Women Voters will join us at IUC and step us through the pros and cons of measures on the California ballot, answer questions, and provide resources.  This is a non-partisan and community-wide event.  You will not want to miss this – and please pass the word to friends and neighbors.  Light snacks will be served.  This election year is big, and it is our privilege as citizens to vote and have a voice.  When we vote we also express faith and hope in our community and our nation, and by events like this, we participate in civil discourse.  Voting is our promise to participate.  We need to be informed.

Fall Congregational Meeting – Sep 25

Annual Report Available

Our fall congregational meeting will follow worship on this Sunday, September 25.  The 2015-2016 Annual Report is available for download now.   The financial summary will be distributed and discussed at the congregational meeting.  Your attendance is very important as we review our resources and the year ahead.  We will be voting on a next step in our property decision, and selecting an exploration team.  We will also be voting to move ahead with a bylaws revision and discernment about our denominational identity.
We hold our understanding of “membership” lightly.  Regardless of whether you have done anything official to join … if you care about this community and seek spiritual connection here, if you consider yourself “one of us,” then so do we.  We value your presence and thoughtful opinion.  Please be with us.

CROP WALK Coming – Oct 2

Materials are now available for the annual CROP walk, Sunday October 2. Sign in, kickoff speeches and music, displays and food starting at 1 pm, then walk at 2 pm from Burgess Park in Menlo Park, raising awareness and funds to combat hunger here and overseas.  Get info and a fundraising envelope in the office – however, fundraising is not required in order to participate.  Sign up for an easy walk with our IUC team (look for “Island” on the team list online).

Homecoming is Here – This Sun, Sep 18!

Remember our fabulous homecoming celebration last fall?  Well, it’s time again!  Put it on your calendar.  The date is THIS Sunday, September 18.  We’ll have a celebratory worship service with great music, and share a BOUNTEOUS potluck lunch, so start planning your food now.  Get out your loudest shirt or your best tennis shoes!  It will also be the day that we commission Lauren as our pastoral intern for the coming school year, and bless her learning and gifts among us.  Please plan to bring a friend, neighbor, or someone who has missed church lately to experience the IUC community – let’s roll out the welcome mat and see new faces!

Summer Movie Series Aug 25 – “Being Mortal”

Mission Hospice in San Mateo is sponsoring a (free!) movie series, on selected Thursday evenings through the summer and fall on fascinating topics related to how we live and die.  We’ll be publicizing them all here.  The next one will be this Thursday, August 25.  It is “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End,” a PBS Frontline film (54 minutes) based on the work of Dr. Atul Gawande.  Discussion follows.  The time is 6:30 pm.  The place is 1670 S. Amphlett Blvd #300, San Mateo.  Perhaps another church member or friend or two would like to get a quick bite to eat first and see the film with you.  No charge, but please call 650-532-2396 or click here to reserve your spot(s).

Bobby Jo Valentine Concert – August 7

Our friends at College Heights UCC are sponsoring a concert with the renowned Bobby Jo Valentine, musical headliner at last year’s Conference Annual Gathering.  Bobby has created wonderful tunes and profound lyrics about life and struggle.  He is also an advocate for LGBT and child advocacy causes, having played the main stage of many of the largest Pride events around the nation, promoting pure, powerful love of all shapes and sizes.  We’re invited – in fact we are co-sponsors!  There’s no charge!  So let’s have a good turnout.  College Heights UCC is at 1150 W. Hillsdale Blvd, San Mateo.  The time is 4:00pm.  Click here to learn more about Bobby Jo Valentine.  Contact PastorCarol if you would like to arrange a carpool.
